The Soundtrack of My Life

A year or so ago I talked to someone about the project I’d been thinking about for years, “The Soundtrack of My Life.”  I was finally given a straightforward challenge to go the hell out and do it.  So I went home on a Friday and started it, and I finished up on Sunday afternoon.

151 songs made the final cut:  down from probably 400 or so that I initially put onto the list.  My wife asked, “Why don’t you just make three discs?”  I replied, “Because just throwing it all on there isn’t challenging.  It’s the decisions, and why I choose one song over another, that really make it an interesting thought experiment.”

At about the 250-song mark it started to get really hard.  To finally get it all whittled down I had to officially compartmentalize my life into sections.  That way, I could look at all the songs I had in there for a period of my life.  Then I could pick and choose which, say, 10 of the 15 were more important to me at that time, or more symbolic of that time.  It was easier doing that than looking at the whole time period and trying to decide which songs to keep and trash out of the whole bunch.

Every song on this list has some meaning to me at that point in my life.  Some are somewhat superficial…”Soulful Terrain” just reminds me of happy times in my childhood.  Some are much deeper, and would require a paragraph, or more than one, to describe them.  I say, here it all is.  If you want an explanation for a song or songs, just ask me and I’m 99% likely to tell you.

Does the order have meaning?  Some.  I didn’t nitpick it too much, so you could change the order a bit and not be too far off…hell, it might make things better.  But I think this fairly accurately reflects different periods in my life.  For the amount of time I wanted to spend on it, it’s pretty good.

So here it is.  This is an interpretation of my life in music, circa 2006.  Sure, it could stand some updating, but for now I think it’s a fair representation.  So far, so good…

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble – Life by the Drop

Those two songs are awesome additions to your list.ha

  2. “Whoracle” is just great as an atmospheric number, isn’t it?

  3. okay…now we’re getting somewhere. i can tolerate your motorcycle-ness because i went ah! about fifty times reading the soundtrack of your life.

certain songs define a point in time so well, i can remember them myself.

and lamb of god kicks so much ass, i’ve seen them like five times in the last few years (yeah, THAT’s what i do when everyone else is snowmobiling…the Rave in Milwaukee and Alpine Valley in East Troy).((Which is where SRV was killed btw.))

    good tunes.

Oh yes, I know about Alpine Valley. :(

And hell yeah to LoG!!! Never seen them live…yet. Me wants to fix that.

If this makes a non-motorcyclist tolerate me and all my bikeitude, then that’s a strong compliment indeed. Thanks!

  4. yeh, till they’re back out on tour, i would suggest finding a copy of their killadelphia dvd; it’s pretty entertaining.

    Sounds cool!

  5. Great list – Quick question – you ever heard of FineTune?
